Mail.app, IMAP, and Trash woes

I have three different IMAP email accounts setup in Mail.app for Tiger. My inbox, smart folders, and custom email directories all sync perfectly between my PowerBook and my G5, but deleted email and sent items do not. I've checked my Account settings and "Store sent messages on the server", "Store deleted messages on the server" and "Move deleted messages to the Trash mailbox" are all checked. I also have it set to never delete sent or permanently erase deleted messages. But if I delete or send an email...poof...it's gone. Anyone else have IMAP issues similar to this in Mail?

Update: I think I have this fixed now. Here's what I did. Using the tips posted here as my basis, I logged into all three of my IMAP accounts through SquirrelMail and ensured that I had subdirectories for "Trash","Junk", "Sent" and "Drafts" under each accounts' "INBOX". I then checked my preferences to ensure that SquirrelMail was using each of those folders for their intended purpose.

I then launched Mail, and the Inbox for each of my IMAP accounts then had the aforementioned subdirectories. I then selected each subdirectory, one at a time, and assigned them their purpose using the "Use This Mailbox For" action noted in the linked tip above. In each instance, the subdirectory was moved from the IMAP account's Inbox to become a subdirectory of the applicable root-level directory in Mail. For example, my "Trash" directory inside Dominey Design's Inbox was moved under Mail's root-level "Trash" directory (the metal can). Ditto for Junk, Sent, and Drafts.

It took a few minutes for Mail on my PowerBook and G5 to both sync up to their new IMAP structure, but it eventually flushed out. Now everything appears to be working okay. Thanks to everyone who posted comments to help me out. Hopefully someone else randomly searching through Google will benefit from this too.

I have these exact problems too, and have thus far been unable to find a solution.

Have had the same issues as well with so solution. Tried every setting available and haven't been able to resolve. I thought it might have something to with hosting but seems the same across .Mac and the other service providers as well.

Same goes for me.
I have particular trouble with GMail, with Mail.app refusing to show read mail in my inbox that I have viewed on one machine on the other.

I do not seem to have these problems with two different IMAP accounts (and I never had).

Try selecting the IMAP folder you want to use for sent mail or deleted items then select Mailbox->Use This Mailbox For->Sent (or Trash).

Oh Yes I have had this problem from day 1. That is the 1 reason that I switched to Tunderbird.

Yep... same here. Just add it to the long list of Tiger oddities that make me wish I was still on Panther.

I've had nothing but glitches and problems using Mail. I switched to Thunderbird and that's not perfect either but MUCH better for my needs.

My problem was that Mail would freeze or take forever for me to download attachments from my work email (on Exchange). Thunderbird works like it should.

The problem is that I really want to use Mail because of it's features like smart foldering, search and integration with Address Book and Dictionary. However for now, Mail doesn't do the biggies and only the frills.

I will french kiss the first person to make a Mac mail client that will work with Microsoft Exchange Server 2001 or before. Oh wait Outlook for OS 9 does that, but screw OS 9. French kiss applies to OS X Tiger only. Hell, if my wife approves, maybe I'll throw a reach around in there.

I've run into weird problems like this too. One thing I've noted is that sometimes you need to specify which IMAP folder to use for certain functions as posted by Eric Chambers above. When I first started using my email on my Mac, I had to turn off the 'Store ___ on Server' options, and then go back and turn them back on (and specify the ocrrect IMAP folders) to get this to work right.

Also, you're on Dreamhost right? In which case, go to the Advanced tab of your mail setup and specify an 'IMAP Path Prefix' of "INBOX" (no quotes) for your dreamhost account.

@Daithi
You won't be able to do this with GMail because it is a POP service, not IMAP. Due to the nature of POP, once you retrieve the e-mail, it is on your Mac, not on the server as it would be with IMAP.

You use Dreamhost, as do I, and therein is the problem. IMAP as set up in .Mac includes the sub folders of "Archive" "Drafts" "Sent Messages" and "Trash", while Dreamhost has the main inbox and then a sub-folder called "old-messages". I was having the same problems as you, until...

I created the folders "Archive" "Drafts" "Sent Messages" and "Trash" in my Dreamhost IMAP accounts, then all was well.

Until I ran out of space and had to move stuff to the main archive on my big computer... so my laptop wouldn't spend 8 days syncing up the sub-folders and tying up gigs of space on my hosting account. So it becomes a bit of maintenance to move stuff to the archive when I no longer need it 100% of the time, but that's good, too, as it forces me to clean out my crap.

Happy emailing!

It's all about the Mailbox->Use This Mailbox For->Options

I have a post that explains some Mail.app IMAP tricks on my website.

But Jared,

You can, with POP, still choose the preference to "leave mail on server" after it downloads, leaving it for other machines to access. I make one of my machines the "control", by unchecking this preference. It doesn't let you access your outgoing mail from each machine, but it's an option for those accessing from a variety of computers.

I haven't had that particular problem, but I've had mail disappear or appear in multiples out of my regular inbox. I haven't experienced the problem on Dreamhost, but Textdrive is having some issues with it due to an upgraded Dovecot... see http://forum.textdrive.com/viewtopic.php?id=5977 for a discussion of the problem.

Guy's sorry for the alternative subject, but I'm kinda desperate on this. My Mail.app keeps sending emails while wrapping at 42 lines, which causes me troubles with many mailing lists. Do you know how can I change that? I need to make the email wrap on 72/73 lines :-(
I try to find something on the web for some time now, but I havent found nothing related.

Thank-you!! I've been having the exact same problem... will try this out when I get home.

Hah! Wonderful, it worked! This was so frustrating when I went to panther that I ended up in Thunderbird out of necesity. Thank you!

Use Thunderbird, dumb-o.

@Mark

You are right, I stand corrected.

With Gmail you can choose to:
-leave gmail's copy in your inbox
-archive gmail's copy
-or delete gmail's copy

I thought traditionally POP would always behave as option #3... I was mistaken, sorry :)

Posted by: Jared Hales at October 14, 2005 11:44 PM

for whoever wished to go back to Panther, you must be joking! Mail.app on 10.4 is way better, in particular in its IMAP implementation. The other day I was testing an alternative IMAP server (dovecot, mentioned here) by making a copy of my main account, which holds 400MB/17000 messages, and it took about an hour to synchronise, that does not look bad for my battered tibook 400 (and my old G4 Tower server).
