Dumpster Diving iMix

What better way to exploit the new iMix feature of iTunes than to revisit the grand ol' stinking pile of dung known as the What Do I Know Dumpster Diving playlist -- an excercise to find the worst songs on the iTunes Music Store and compile them all together in one handy playlist. Those with a strong stomach can now preview all the songs together through the Dumpster Diving iMix. With a little luck, and a few five star ratings, it'll be the Hasselhoff of the iTMS.

Comments

I wonder how feasible it would for Apple to provide a percentage of the sales from an iMix playlist ala Amazon's Associates program?

Hmmm, what's 1% of $0.99? Not exactly a great way to pay for my son's college.

Nice Todd. Just pulled up the dumpster playlist. I haven't heard some of those songs for years -- decades even.

This sharing of mixes through iMix is pretty cool. The fact that you can add your own little descriptive blurb about the playlist is nice too. In fact, I'm impressed with many of the new features I'm just discovering in the new iTunes (app and store) this morning. Not the least of those is the deeper integration with QuickTime and the ability to play movie trailers and music videos directly within iTunes. Nice work Apple.

I'm stunned, especially considering there were zero rumors or news about this update.

Music videos are fantastic, especially since you'll be damned to find new music videos anywhere on television these days. And the movie trailers...very smart. Free downloads? Hell yeah. Wonder how many iPods will contain that Foo Fighters song now. Radio Charts are great, but I wish they had a greater variety of stations (Atlanta's area just has the big Clear Channel junk). Also of note is the new ability to print jewel case art for burned CDs, which is so obvious yet something nobody has done well (until now). With the additional video clips, and open-public iMix community space, iTunes could easily grow into one hell of an entertainment hub.

And to think it all started with SoundJam. :)

one caveat... a coworker just upgraded to 4.5 and now users on the network running 4.2 can't listen to her shared music. doh.

I just love the new iTunes. I think the Party Shuffle feature is very nice and well executed. And watching music videos and movie trailers in iTunes is a nice feature as well. Now if you could only preview whole songs, that would make my day.

I've got an iMix for ya Todd... http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPublishedPlaylist?id=11012

Enjoy!

Anyone else have to manually download the update versus finding it in Software Update?

Posted by: Greg at April 28, 2004 12:28 PM

How did you guys get links to the iMixes?

Posted by: Steve at April 28, 2004 2:31 PM

Anyone else finding it extremely slow now?

Posted by: Tim at April 28, 2004 3:18 PM

Are the free downloads just for this week to celebrate the 1 year anniversary or will there be 1 single per week from now on as well? Anyone know.

Yes, I had to download both the ipod and itunes updates manually for some reason, updater missed them for me.

It does seem slow. I also updated the list with 5 stars.

I love Apple iTunes Music Store.

the store must be getting slammed. I want my free foo fighters song.

When you click to download the Foo Fighters song, it brings up a list of new iTunes features. "Free single of the week" is included. I assume they'll keep it going forward.

damn. it's just a song I already have. free downloads though are a great idea. i'm cheap.

i'm still reeling in horror that you've included sledgehammer in the dumpster. i'll admit my horrible taste for loving the cinderella track, but sledgehammer?

Ordinarily I'm a big fan of anything Apple-related, but news that Steve Jobs' minions rejected J. Love's masturbation-themed "One To Tango" playlist for inclusion in the iTunes Store struck me as absurd. Let's get this straight - a "Tribute to the Vietnam War" mix is OK, but a much-needed "Music to Wank By" one isn't? That's so not fair. Guess we'll have to find somewhere else to post "Anal Creampie 2: Electric Boogaloo...

I'm sorry, but this can't possibly qualify as a "worst-of" list. It sounds more like a collection of songs that someone is really sick of hearing because they listen to too much pop-oldies radio. There are a couple of excellent entries, such as "Half Breed" and "I've Never Been to You." But "The Logical Song"? And "Dream Weaver"? "Sister Golden Hair"? These are practically canonical entries in American pop tradition. Some of the entries are so obvious as to be cliche, like "Mandy" (and couldn't it be ANY Barry Manilow song).

My gosh, these are all songs I spent my formative years listening to with my ear against the crappy radio on my nightstand, hours after I was supposed to have been asleep, hoping to find a nugget of GOOD music in between all the twaddle played by the one non-country FM station I could get. "Please god, just one Led Zeppelin tune. Or maybe the Eagles? Heck, even Lynrd Skynrd or Bob Segar would do ... just stop making me listen to this ..."

Please consider adding the song Wildfire to your Dumpster Diving iTunes playlist, by Michael Murphey. It deserves to be there!

I live 20 minutes from NYC ...you can include most songs they played on commercial radio in my area. I've found better radio stations in Florida! Why do they insist on feeding us bad noise? Record Co's need to stop lining the pockets of station owners - maybe if we ask them nicely ...yeah...that's it...that'll work.
