The Future of "Adult" Music

Reading this NY Times piece by music writer Jody Rosen, I ran across a rather obvious, yet intriguing stab at what "adult" music, the same genre currently occupied by groups like Coldplay, Dixie Chicks, Norah Jones, etc., will sound like when today's teenagers innevitably become adults.

Before too long, hip-hop will lose its vitality and its grip on young listeners; the first generation to come of age with rap as mainstream pop music will grow up and hit singles will recede, along with hairlines, into an idealized past. Surely, adult music will be redefined accordingly. Break beats and turntable scratches will conjure a lost world of authenticity, just as the growl of a Stratocaster or the twang of a pedal steel does today, and a future generation will make strange new music with as yet undreamt-of machines, while today's kids -- tomorrow's adults -- plug their ears at the dreadful noise.

Though he isn't mentioned, I would stipulate that Beck would be the perfect emodiment of such a sound. Only problem is, he's alive and writing music today. If Beck was born 20 years later, released "Loser" in 2020, would it be an adult radio smash?

Oh but I'd find it so amusing seeing forty-somethings hog all the dance space at a rave. Long live breakbeat culture. However, it would be more amusing to have adults twenty years down the line still think that Ja Rule can produce a quality record.

Why not? Who can tell how music will sound 20 years from now? Maybe it will sound like the 80s again (God forbid!).
Last year or the year before that (I wasn't paying too much attention) there was an ABBA revival movement that included new "Best of" ABBA records, special edition re-mastered cd boxes, ABBA look alike bands and some other strange things that were a huge hit.
I'm not going to comment the taste (or lack thereof) or even the fact that the Swedish government didn't even apologize for that, but that crazy wave caught teenagers and also young adults. There were many people listening to that BS again.
For me that is as strange as my young sister (she's 21) liking Bee Gees. I guess the "you were found in a garbage bin" stories I used to tell her were true =)

last year, in a chatroom, Yoko Ono said if John Lennon was alive he would be doing RAP. i agree in therms (maybe he'll be wirting songs with artists like alanis morissette or bono vox), but it's an interesting revelation, and yoko ono had real strone influence on Lennon's career. so, i believe RAP will keep going, maybe not like that, maybe he'll grow up together with its generation. or maybe just ADULT RAP will survive. anyway, RAP has to keep showing strengh because there's already a new generation coming in.
