Duct Tape Anxiety

Perhaps it's just me, but there seems to be a palatable level of anxiety now - right now - in the American public, which, in turn, breeds bizarre behavior like dashing off to the corner Home Depot to load up on duct tape. Perhaps I'm missing something, but I have a hard time believing duct tape, when applied to windows, would actually deter much of anything - except, well, oxygen. Between the vague terror alerts, long-range missiles, psychotic dictators, and drums of war, September 10th seems so very long ago.

Oh come now, you haven't heard the power of Duct Tape? Maybe it's time to do a little research with "The Handiman's Secret Weapon".

I REALLY don't understand the mass hysteria. It doesn't make much sense to go around buying mass supplies to protect against mass destruction that is unlikely to happen. Honestly, if some country is truely stupid enough to drop a nuclear bomb in our backyard, do you really want to live through it to deal with the aftermath?

Why not live your life to the fullest each day and not worry about things that you have absolutely no control over. If you die, you die. No amount of hysteria or worrying is going to change it.

Realize the blessings of those around you each day and be thankful. Leave the worrying and handwringing to those idiots in places like N. Korea and Iraq when they realize that their actions will likely mean complete obliteration.

I remember when we were going to attack Iraq the first time. Some idiot on the news said that gas prices would probably skyrocket, so (being the intelligent humans that they are), the masses stormed the local gas stations, because we were all going to die or something.

I also remember the feeling of utter disgust as my friend and I drove past the local 7/11. We almost couldn't get by with so many cars piled up to get gas.

Ofcourse as we drove off we yelled out the obligatory, "It's idiots like you who make terrorism possible!"

When will people learn?

(P.s. - Gas never even went up a cent)

Hey, McGyver always carried a roll of duct tape around...

If only I could duct tape my dog's ass. The gas from him is far worse than anything Iraq can come up with.

Is it possible that this well thought out plan was some off the cuff remark, blown out of proportion? CNN pulls one of its many chemical weapons experts on T.V.

Reporter Question: What can American's do to protect themselves from Checmical Weapons?
Analyst: They could get gas masks or seal off a room.

Reporter: Would duct tape be adequate for sealing a room?
Analyst: It could seal possible cracks, but it has never...

Reporter: Sounds like duct tape is the answer.

News Headline across the US: Buy Duct Tape to protect from Chemical weapons!

Nice!

Has anyone you know actually bought duct tape?

This seems like a case of media hysteria, fed by the paranoid Bush administration. It makes great copy, you know?

But who's actually going out and buying duct tape? Or stocking up on food?

Nobody I know, but then Oregon's not exactly an attractive target for an attack, is it?

in the event of an explosion which would cause your windows to blow out, carefully applied duct tape coule help prevent flying glass.

that's the only use i can possibly think of.

the whole terror threat level system sees to me to be a stupid idea. so they tell me the threat is elevated this weekend. how will that affect my life? not at all. saying there's an elevated threat isn't enough information for me to make intelligent decision which my save my life, it's just enough information to make me nervous and paranoid, and mroe likely to vote yes on a poll asking whether we should go to war.

bunch of propaganda...

I saw an interview on TV with a "nuclear/biological arms expert" and he was asked about the sudden fasincation with duct tape. He replied:
"If people really want to avoid death and be safe they should eat healthier, go out and exercise, so they don't die of heart disease."

Interesting perspective. I assume he's suggesting that the odds are greater that one will die of a heart attack than from nuclear/biological weapons exposure.

the duct tape suggestion is from the red cross. on their web site, they list it as one of the items that you should keep in an emergency preparedness kit.

perhaps if you lived here in new york, your concerns might be different. there is a reason the threat alert is going up and i don't think it's an over reaction to prepare for that. buying duct tape (which i didn't do because i, like any 'true handyman' already have a roll) is not hurting anyone...i wouldn't say it's being a victim of terrorism. if there is a small scale gas attack (which is the most likely scenario), and if, by the slim chance i did know about it, i would feel pretty stupid that i blew the suggestion off as hype while looking through the gaps around these 50-year-old windows that are so common in the city. maybe it would make no difference, but what would you do in the middle of the city when the news got out? as the boy scout motto simply commands....be prepared.

My fam actually own a "Mom & Pop" hardware store, and they report sales are way up on duct tape and plastic sheeting. They live in rural Connecticut. It does help that they're 10mi from a nuclear reactor. Is it stupid to buy this stuff? Me: yeah. Am I happy it's helping my parents through the recession? Yeah.

This is really one of those moments that could bring tears into any of M. Pythons eyes. 30 years later the non-sense spirit is still alive and the silliness flame is being carried by (who would have guessed) the Americans.

Silliness aside is sad to see the American people victim of your own medicine.
No matter what everyone else thinks, not even NATO, the USA will bomb the shit off Iraq after the most disgusting brainwashing action ever where Bin Laden is replaced for Saddam. Worst than that is realizing that the real agenda behind this war is money, status and more money, not terrorism.

Now, if only someone could explain me how, the people of the most powerful country in the world, that is preparing to eradicate a broken and lousy middle east country off the map, are acting like Iraqis, I would appreciate it.

My father-in-law said to me last night, "I'm waiting to see on the news where they pull the first bodies out of the house where the people suffocated themselves by locking themselves in a completely sealed off room for several days."

Remember: if you must duct-tape yourself into a room, you're only good for about an hour or so. By then, any gas/particles/vapors will have dissapated, and you'll be OK. Otherwise, you're just killing yourself.
