OS X Software: NetNewsWire

NetNewsWireIt's official -- NetNewsWire Pro from Ranchero Software has finally been released after months of public beta testing. For those not in the know, NetNewsWire acquires and displays the raw textual content of web sites offering RSS news feeds (like mine) in a simple, fast interface. Beyond that, the Pro version also includes a very slick weblog editor for users of Radio, Blogger, MovableType and others, plus a scrapbook style notepad to store text clippings, urls, or local files. Once you get used to the interface, and fill your subscription pane with the RSS feeds of your favorite sites, you'll have a hard time going back.

Tip: If you open the preferences for NetNewsWire, you'll notice under "General" tab three options to turn on extra headline fields for an entry's post date, creator, and subject. The second thing you'll notice is that very few RSS feeds contain this data. If you use MovableType on your weblog, you can copy and paste these RSS templates for both RSS 1.0 and 2.0 documents. Rebuild, and you'll be dishing out richer feeds for RSS readers to enjoy.

Comments

So... can you recommend a good site for an overview of the differences between 0.91, 1.0 and 2.0 feeds? NNW seems to absorb them all without much difficulty, but I know I've read about some controversy around the different specifications.

Yes. NetNewsWire rocks. Period. :)

In case someone comes back here (including brian w)... Dive Into Mark has an article about the differences between all those RSS versions. Explains a lot.
