Textpattern

Dean Allen of Textism has opened the official home of Textpattern, his self-rolled, soon to be released CMS system for weblogs and the like. Dean contributes some very interesting ideas to the software genre, including (my favorite) a page layout preference pane for newbies who need easy access to templates, separation of entries into multiple categories and sections, a simple and straightforward single page of preferences, and much more. Very handsome.

This looks great! It looks like it will be much simpler and easier to set up and use than Moveable Type. Although MT is an extremely powerful weblog system, this one looks to have most everything the average writer could want and then some without the hassle of setup that MT has.

i'm still looking for a web log system that will let me set an expiration date for every article, and not scroll articles off the main page until their expiration date.

does such a thing exist? i think you can do it with geeklog, although i'm not sure and geeklog is too big a monster for me to tackle...

hey sam,

i'm not sure how comfortable you feel with going in and editing templates and html, but if you have Movable Type, you can adjust the values in the "MTEntries" tag to display the last 'N' days worth of posts.

for instance, the following code generates a list of the last 15 days worth of posts:

Of course, you'll need more than just that (code that actually places the right data on the page...), but that should at least give you somewhere to start.

visit the following URL for more info on this tag: http://www.movabletype.org/docs/mtmanual_tags.html#item_MTEntries

hope this helps!

This looks like a promising CMS for weblogging, but it just doesn't have the power and flexibility that many of today's CMS feature. However, for those new to the blogging world will most likely find this software to be extremely useful. I wish Textpattern the best of luck. Hell, I'll probably end up downloading it to look at the source code, curious to see how Dean chose to accomplish everything. I'm looking into developing a CMS myself.

okay, my code didn't show up above... the point i was trying to make is that to find out more info about making stories last only a certian time on a page (in MT), visit http://www.movabletype.org/docs/mtmanual_tags.html#item_MTEntries

I would be interested to see how it compares with pMachine (http://www.pmachine.com/). pM is pretty powerful and flexible, and by far the easiest install I've ever done. Still getting my brain around it all... so many [blog] CMS choices!
