Moby Attacked Outside Nightclub

Normally I don't write about celebrity news, but this one is different. One, it involves one of the few globally recognized celebrities who uses the web in a smart, personal way to keep in touch with fans and offer personal insights (and thus, in a way, makes him a distant colleague), and two because (from what I can tell) this hasn't appeared in the mainstream music press. Anyhoo - Moby (yeah, that Moby) wrote in his weblog today that he was attacked outside a nightclub last night by three guys wielding fists and a can of mace.

What strikes me about the post is his willingness to share the news with fans in this manner. Most celebrities, especially male celebrities, would deny the attack, or distribute a damage control press release effectively reading, "yeah, but you should have seen the other guys." Or, Moby could have said he fell out of his bunk on the tour bus and made a mess of his face. Instead, Moby is not only honest, but forgiving of his assailants.

I have my suspicions about the impetus behind the attack (anyone watch the MTV Video Music Awards?), but I'm just amazed sometimes at the moronic brutality of many young American men.

Comments

I like Moby's music a lot. Quite the intelligent gentleman.

I don't care for Eminem, his messages, or his brainwashed - and angry - fans.

Moby is the man. I saw him at Area:One and he was great. I'm not a big fan of "18" but his older stuff is just amazing. "Play" is probably the best electronica album ever. His older club stuff is quite different than his sound of the present if you like his style. I highly recommend tracks like "Anthem" or "Go" which are way more upbeat than his style on "Play" and "18". People should just leave him alone and let him do his thing.

I just find it interesting that they were so quick to pin this on Eminem fans. So far, the only relation to Eminem and this attack is pure speculation.

All I've seen is speculation, and even the speculation has been muted. You may be a little hypersensitive to criticism of m&m.

I didn’t see the music awards. What did I miss related to this attack?

The public dispute between Eminem and Everlast turned violent in Detroit last year when Everlast's appearance at a prominent hip-hop club was cut short by several large guys who jumped him and beat him up pretty badly. The incident was immediately linked to D12 (Eminem's known-for-violence Detroit crew), who were touring in Europe at the time. This means nothing, of course, except providing precedent for such speculation.

The feud between Moby and Eminem began at last year's Grammys, when Moby called Eminem a ''misogynist'' and a ''homophobe,'' Entertainment Weekly reported on its Web site. At this year's MTV Video Music Awards, Eminem said of Moby from the stage, ''I will hit a man with glasses,'' the magazine reported.
In the song ''Without Me,'' Eminem raps ''And Moby, you can get stomped by Obie'' (referring to Eminem's DJ, Obie Trice). Eminem's most recent US tour also included the mock murder of a Moby impersonator, which culminates with the rapper ''shooting'' the Moby look-alike. A representative at Eminem's record company asserts that the rapper has ''never advocated violence against Moby.'"

Huh. Eminem will hit a man with glasses and the irony is that Moby thought that Eminem music was violent and misogynistic.

Ok. I know this post is not about eminem but what pisses me off the most bout this guy is that there are groups like Anti Pop Consortium making records that are "firmly rooted in hip-hop but not confined by it" that are really doing something lyrically and musically and the press continues to focus on this herb Emimen, who in my opinion is good but not nearly the god of hip hop that he would seem to be. He is a safe, pushes no boundaries. So, great more speculation and more press for this shithead. Yea he can rhyme, so can a million other kids on street corners all over america. so what. Moby should ignore him instead of even acknowledging his presense. (Moby also may as well be musak)

what angers me about this m&m issue is that moby turns around and says that m&m is a talented guy and he has no issues with him. evidently mr. "my name is" has some issues with moby. what did moby do to him? probably nothing but this is the extent of mr. m&m talent. he can talk and bad mouth even his mother. he needs to look at himself in the mirror before he points fingers. talented or not if his threats where directed at me i would tell him to kiss my ass. so they both piss me off. moby for being a spineless winnie and eminem for picking on weaklings.

You see weenie, I see the type of person the world needs more of. Not his music, but his turn the other cheek attitude advocated by Jesus, Gandhi, and MLK.

The "mess with me and I'll break you" approach hasn't done much for mankind, and its followers are less than a dime a dozen.

Oddly enough, I enjoy both Moby and some of Eminem's work. Personally I feel that both artists are highly missunderstood. I think it's great that Moby keeps a blog, I only wish Eminem did... imagine the content on that site...

You added "American" to that last setence. What's their nationality have to do with it? There's something partcularly brutal about _American_ young men, more than any other nation's young men? What about European soccer riots, eh?

Read Moby's latest entry "My Week" from 12/16. While it is a no-brainer for most people to hate Moby because of his beliefs and music, I have a feeling people are intimidated because he actually has a passion and feels strongly about certain issues. Not to mention, people do not like any kind of musician to make any more money than they do. Oh well to they naysayers I say because even though Moby might be a weenie to you ... you're just jealous.

I see that the good people of Spin Magazine recently voted Moby as the "most underrated artist." What the...??? I would say that OVERRATED would be a more accurate description of the little bald veggie snacker. If he was an artist, I would have a high level of respect for him and his work even though he personally annoys me a little bit. However, since all he ever seems to do is crunch out corporate tunes for our commercial culture - I have a hard time trying to find any respect for that considering the limelight he tries to constantly put himself in. I would respect him if he was cranking tunes out for an ad agency, which really is essentially what he does. His official moniker should be "Moby - Jingle Writer for the Masses."
