OS X Software: SnowSaver

Snow SaverIf you're feeling inspired by the new holiday-themed masthead here, be sure to download the gorgeous new OpenGL SnowSaver modeled after the unavailable QuickTime animation Apple is playing on their Apple store machines. When installed, be sure to click the "Configure" button in Screen Effects to set the background color, depth of field, number of flakes, and fog. You can then kick that holiday flavor up another notch by downloading Freshly Squeezed Sotware's excellent freeware app Backlight to run the as your desktop background. I can hear those sleigh bells coming...

Thank you for sharing these links. I just made the jump to OS X (though not Jaguar yet) and download all the software you recommended and have loved it. :)

I've been running SnowSaver for a while now... it's so simple, yet so beautiful and serene. I guess it'll have to do, since we don't get a lot of snow here in CA...

Running Jaguar on an older Mac? Want to see it freak? Try running a screensaver as the desktop background. After trying for 10 minutes to stop the screensaver from playing (since it took so much processing, everything else was basically frozen) I had to restart by holding the power button down. Yeah I was warned (if your machine can't handle Quartz Extreme, this fun is not for you), but I wanted to see what would happen. Not pretty. Actually, pretty, just your computer ceases to do anything else with it engaged!

Thanks, Mike, for the reference to Snö. It's been cheering my desktop since yesterday. A lovely toy.
