Papercut - True 3D Typography

The crew over at Typographica picked up a nice find in typography news with Papercut - a new "true" three dimensional typeface, of sorts, by Avi Haltovsky. Instead of applying perspective to an existing face, Papercut is composed of undulating shapes which only reveal their true character when viewed from the proper angle. To my eyes, the face doesn't serve much purpose in a flat environment, but is absolutely screaming to be used in motion graphics. I wouldn't be surprised at all to enter a movie theater, a year or two from now, and see on screen those flowing whisps morphing about to ultimately form a film's title. Limited use in reality, but could make quite a statement if used in the right way.

When I saw 3D tyepface, it reminded me of this offering from Font Pavilion. Looks like snap together model parts :)

Papercut reminds me a bit of the cover of Hofstadter's Godel, Escher, Bach.
