MTV, MTV, MTV
Hard to believe a year has passed since I wrote about the MTV Video Music Awards. Why I subject myself to watching the show, year after year, is truly beyond me. Every year I hate it. Every year I groan and how overproduced, how phony, how bad a lot of the music is MTV so proudly shoves down America's throat. Looking back, everything I said last year is still true.
Every year I think something memorable, or funny, or unexpected may happen - but it never does. Everyone is so tightly choreographed, so concerned about their image, so self involved, so concerned about moving units that it just deepens my disdain for the entire recording industry.
Michael Jackson won yet another goddamn award for absolutely nothing. The man hasn't had a hit record in years. His last record was a total bomb. He is completely irrelevant. So because he wasn't nominated for anything, MTV invents some other stupid "artist of the millenium" honorary award, and trots the nutcase out on stage for all to stand, applaud, and gab endlessly about what a "genius" he is. Year, after year, after year.
Moby will certainly be writing something on his website about his dealings with Eminem at the show. Someone booed, more people booed, and Eminem made some crack about not being afraid to "slap a guy with glasses" or some line. At any rate, Moby has written on his weblog about Eminem's odd obsession once before, so it should be interesting.
And then Axl Rose appeared. I gave up.
Comments
W-what? Axl Rose was there? And, how is this a bad thing, exactly?
Axl Rose is a lyrical as well as musical genious, in all likelihood the reincarnation of Christ, but better.
I could go on.
