OS X Software: CandyBar

Candy BarOne of the historical hallmarks of using a Macintosh has always been the easy copy-and-paste customization of icons. OS X carries on that tradition, but to the chagrin of many long-time Mac users, only allows the alteration of non operating system level links and applications. Untouchable items included Computer, Home, Favorites, and the Trash Can - all practically impossible to change without dangerous hacks. Not any more.

The wizards at Iconfactory and Panic have jointly released CandyBar - a drag and drop utility which allows OS X users to finally change all the aforementioned system icons, and anything else for that matter. The developers also went the extra mile to allow a one-click return to your default state should you ever change your mind.

Included in the download is a welcome collection of very well designed Macintosh hardware icons so you can change your Computer icon (from an iMac) to match your rig - PowerBook, Cube, iBook, QuickSilver, etc.

While at Panic, I noticed they have some pretty swank QuickTime VR of their new "professional" digs.

t.

i just checked it out and it sure looks sweet. hehe.

? though. i wonder if it's able to get around what seems to be a problem with assigning new icons to the "home" folder, etc.?

I'm really considering making the swith from OS 9 to X but I was hoping you could help me. You have some really cool recommendations and I was hoping you could tell me which apps you deem essential to a OS X newbie :)

Thanks for the OS X tips you've been providing lately! Very handy for somebody like me who just made the leap from 9 to Jaguar and feels a wee bit lost.

My must-haves:

1. Adium

2. BBEdit

It's always a good idea to check versiontracker.com for cool new apps, as well.

Well I'm talking about little applications like Candybar, the Glu thing and the postage one. Things like that, that really are useful and neat :) What's Adium though? The mp3 player?
