OS X 10.2 for $79
Update: Amazon.com has removed the offer due to "overwhelming demand." They have stated however that all preorders submitted while the rebate was offered will be accepted.
If you pre-ordered OS X 10.2, aka Jaguar, from the Apple Store, you may want to cancel it - pronto. Amazon.com is selling the mammoth update for only $79 ($130 MSRP) after mail-in rebate. Besides Apple's $69 educational / student offer, this is easily the best consumer price on Jaguar anywhere. And, oh yeah, free shipping too. Offer good today through September 3, 2002.

Link fixed.

The rebate coupon says 10.1.... hope that doesn't "confuse" the company that's handing out the rebates. Otherwise, it's good to have a wife that's a teacher :)

They've changed the rebate coupon. If you got it over the weekend, you may have been able to get 10.2 with a rebate. I checked out the coupon on Saturday when I first heard about the offer and sure enough it said 10.2, but it was in the first row of line items. They have obviously corrected their mistake because it has moved to the second row and of course it says 10.1 now.
I was wondering how they could do that anyway. Now I know they couldn't. Too bad.

It does appear to be real. A rebate coupon with 10.2 on it can be printed from http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00006ANW9.01.RB02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg
This courtesy of Daypop (which, in turn, is courtesy of NetNewsWire Lite, which I heard about here).

Thanks for letting us know, Todd. I printed out the product description page with the offer so if they try to back out of a mistake, I have proof. Looking forward to finally get OSX and maybe getting my font problem with Flash MX resolved.

Hold your horses! I wrote Amazon about this and got the following in response:
"Thank you for writing to us at Amazon.com.
After researching this matter, I found that the link on our web site
has been updated to link to the correct rebate form for Mac OS X 10.2
Jaguar. You will find the correct coupon at the following URL:
http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00006F7S2.01.RB02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg
I apologize for any inconvenience that this may have caused. Thank
you for shopping at Amazon.com."
This coupon does indeed list 10.2 Jaguar and looks to be the same coupon posted a few messages ago.
So it looks like we might get 10.2 for the discount after all!

I'm afraid of one thing. What if I buy the amazon deal and then later in the month Apple decides to let current 10.1 users to upgrade for 19.95 or something.

Ed, double-check the fine print because I don't want to steer you wrong, but I'm fairly sure this rebate offer is valid until September 3. The only "downside" I can think of is if Apple's Jaguar sales are so slow that 3-6 weeks after its release, they decide to offer an extremely cheap upgrade price. Then again, if you don't take advantage of the rebate, you'll be stuck with the full $129. So I guess it's a bit of a crapshoot, eh?

never buy the first release. better to wait until 10.2.1 or later :)
Posted by: phil at July 30, 2002 3:22 PM
10.2.1 will probably be free for people who own 10.2.0

To answer mathew's question, sadly, no. Amazon.ca is but a pale reflection of the US version. It does not carry software, just books, CDs, DVDs and videos. So we have to order it through Apple.ca or our favourite online or local Mac retailers. :/

Evidently offer good through July 31, 2002 -- it's disappeared! Crap! I bet you Apple made them withdraw it ... sunzabitches ...

Todd, wondering where you got your info.
Even though it says the item was discontinued, I was still able to place an order for it. I've never tried to place an order for a discontinued item before this, but does Amazon actually let you place an order for a discontinued item? Seems to me that a pioneer in usability and customer focus approach wouldn't let orders be placed for items they no longer carry.
Post a link to the Amazon update if you've got one.

Ah...I went to http://www.macnn.com and saw the news article.
However, they say they changed the rebate form. I happen to have the original so I wonder if my order just placed will ship (see above), and if so, can I get a rebate using the old School of Rebates coupon?

From MacMinute: "Overwhelming demand caused Amazon.com to retract its $50 rebate for Mac OS X 10.2. Amazon.com caught the attention of the Mac community earlier this week when it rolled out the exclusive rebate, but pulled it yesterday afternoon without notice. 'Customer response exceeded our wildest expectations so we're not continuing the rebate at this time,' Ling Hong, an Amazon.com spokesperson told MacMinute. 'But obviously all the pre-orders that we received during the time that the rebate offer was posted on our site will be honored.' Hong said all orders place up until 7:00 pm PDT yesterday will be eligible."

The mac community is just too small to worry about.... ; )
