Ellen Feiss talks about her new Mac. Or something.

Oh dear lord... Apple, you could have found almost ANYONE else to do that ad...
But seriously folks... I had to check the URL to make sure this wasn't a goof...

Looks like they pulled it. Anyone have a copy?
Posted by: ian thompson at July 17, 2002 12:13 AM
Yep. It's gone. They must have been listening, Todd. ;)

Gone!? Doh. I was just about to blog it myself. I thought it was very funny... I liked the blood-shot eyes particularly. Surely someone grabbed it?

and, while unrelated, this is interesting for another hour or so.

Who are the ad-wizards that came up with this one?
Posted by: Doug H. at July 17, 2002 8:30 AM
t,
while a cutie, i like, agree that she, like, was kinda confusing. i mean, i like, can't really understand what she's like, even saying! hmm..

That was totally my sister! I can't wait to show it to the fam, they'll laugh at the resemblance.

Even though they pulled her ad, she still got a ticket to the keynote.

I'm not sure what is up with the switch campaign. Mud slinging doesn't suit Apple. Here's what penny-arcade thinks about it:
Posted by: Xian at July 17, 2002 10:47 AM
Ya know, I kinda like the ad (but, then again, I've been watching way too much MTV lately). Maybe Apple was trying to say that anyone can use a Mac.

HAHA!
And it was like BIPIPIPIP, and, like, half of my paper was gone and i was, like, Huh?

Don't you think this dork is going to have a lot more issues in life. She definitely needs quit drinking the bong water. I can't wait to SNL comes back live. They would have a field day with all these losers. I think it makes Apple look stupid.

One of my favorite SNL commercial skits of late was a financial firm that had the web address www.clownpenis.fart.

That is v funny and spectacularly misguided - so glad someone saved it.
Just say no to drugs (and PCs) kids

Talk about chinese eyes...

What I want to know is, where is the Will Ferrell (Porn Star) ad? Will I be seeing that on TV or what? :)
Posted by: james at July 17, 2002 5:51 PM
It's still on Apple's site. My guess is, any one of you looking back on video footage of you at age 17, you'd feel you came accross really stupid also, maybe even stoned. keep in mind that, yes, this was orignally a true story, but that once she enters apple's studio she's scripted, lighted, edited...all to make appear just how they want her too.

This ad does nothing but make Apple look bad. This is bad art direction, and worse copy. The direction of the campaign is good, and on the most part, well executed...I don't think they thought this one [ellen feiss] through
Posted by: mike at July 19, 2002 1:10 AM
Yep, she was at the keynote.

But Mike...what if you were a 12 year old girl...this just might speak to you. Definitely in a way that nothing on Microsofts, Dells, or Intels sites would. I'm assuming this ad wouldn't get the same ad space as some of the others featuring coherent adults...

It's back up again. :)

We got an interview with Ellen. Check it out.
Posted by: IRNI at July 20, 2002 12:28 PM
People. stop giving Apple and her a bad time. I think the add totally appealed to a ton of high students as well as college students, mostly due to the fact that she WAS high. There are a lot of people out there who like to smoke the green stuff. It's probably the funnest and most amusing switch ad I've seen yet.
Posted by: Jonas at July 21, 2002 12:55 AM
This ad is a Real Story on a different level (please read between the lines for once). It is all about her not really writing the paper in the first place, claiming the dog, eh, PC ate it and so on. Her written ěreal storyî claims the whole paper was gone, the movie is just ěhalf the paperî. It is all really nice reality stuff. Címon guys, weíve all been there, done that at some point in our lives, at least once, maybe?, anyone? This ad is good and it is real. And she is just so much better than this weird dell guy. (Obviously fake and on something much stronger than Ellen, dontya think?) Pliplipplipliplip....

I knew the minute i watched the opening of the keynote that Ellen would live in my heart forever. She has Real Ultimate Power.
Posted by: Jake at July 22, 2002 3:59 PM
This ad makes me laugh every time I see it -
I think it's actually quite well done.. Only people with PCs don't have a sense of humour so maybe there's few more of you out there that need to switch! Leave Ellen alone- She's flyin' her freak flag high!
Posted by: Whitey at July 23, 2002 1:18 PM
This is much better than the usual "I'm a retard, I can't figure a PC out" angle Apple uses. ...at least Ellen has a reason for being a little confused.. ;)
Posted by: Dave at July 23, 2002 4:56 PM
hahahaha. Yeah... just to let you know, if you didn't know already (you'd have to be pretty damn stupid), but the sexcow airlines interview is totally fake, and she would not have smoked a bong at the studio. if she did, she'd probably look a lot more stoned.
just my thought

This commercial is wonderful. It was (as all commercials) designed to target a demographic. case scenario. young girl or boy sees ad, ellen is cute and hip. they want a mac. tell parents. they get a mac. apple sells another mac, maybe an ipod too. commercial is a success. worse case scenario.... we're talking about it.

Brilliant! Fabulous marketing. I'll bet Bill's having a good laugh. In any case the commercial misses a key point: he she been using MS Word she could have set the program to "autosave" her no-doubt genius paper. Then again, if she had the wherewithal to use MS products, she might not still be a student....
