MTV Movie Awards

Somewhere tonight deep inside the Times Square studios of MTV sits a webmaster on the verge of a pink slip. Before the MTV Movie Awards even started tonight at 9pm ET, MTV's web site featured the winners in every category.

Even without the gaffe, MTV's Movie Awards simply reek of insider shenanigans. Why else would Will Smith and Nicole Kidman even bother showing up for a third rate cable award show, and sit through two hours of (God forbid) Kelly Osbourne and an endless stream of VJs talking about how great, wild, and C-R-A-Z-Y-! MTV (supposedly) is, unless their agents were assured, either directly or implied, that their client would win?

I dunno what the hell was up with it tonight. Starting with the design, what was exactly the identity they were going for? I saw references to about three possibilities. It's like they forgot to do the design and came up with something two hours down to the wire. Everybody at the awards looked as if they didn't even want to be there, I was shocked to see Kiddman rambling "um.. uh.." during both her speeches. This year's awards were a complete bomb. Was anyone even watching?

"Not I," said the little duck.

As an entertainment reporter, I can tell you the MTV webmaster is secure in his job. The awards were handed out on the weekend. The winners were released on the wires on Saturday (see http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20020602/ap_on_en_mo/mtv_movie_awards_list_1) and yes, the winners, like the winners of the People's Choice Awards, know ahead of time. Several of the smaller award shows (like Teen Choice) are of the "know ahead of time" type.

I think included in the "just show up and we'll give you an award deal" is buckets of face-time for said star. I remember last year they wouldn't shut up about Tom Cruise being there for the whole program.

I feel dirty just having watched...

Well, they were filmed last week. The result were online in several places then. And i wouldn't admit to if pressed, but Extra or ET or whatever ran a piece mentioning several of the winners.

I'm not sure anyone expects them to be anything but insider shenanigns. In that way perhaps they'r emore honest than the Oscars

I liked the awards, but then again I didn't get on MTV's website and see all the winners! The only thing I didn't like was Nicole Kidman! Do ya'll know she's dating Tobey MacGuire! Isn't he really young? It's like she can't get a guy her own age! I hate to be rude toward her since I don't know her, but it was rude of her to get up there and say, "I'm bummed we didn't get best kiss...we should have rehearsed more!" Maybe she didn't mean it rude but it sounded that way to me!
