Scared of Flash MX

This thread over at were-here.com is quite long, but a very good read concerning the release, and potential future of Flash now that Macromedia is pushing application development full tilt.

The concern? That like the gradual integration (or erosion) of the desktop publishing industry to in-house advertising agencies, Flash is splintering itself into two camps - designers, and developers - while further integrating itself into both sides of the already established industries.

C++ and Java developers without a lick of design sense can use their specialized education to easily code and deploy Flash based applications without need for the current crop of Flash developers. By removing the need for programmers, graphic designers with solid interface, typography and an "eye" for style and color, automatically become more important to the equation. The result? A glut of current, non-specialized developers locked in the middle, without a clue which direction to go in. As evidenced by the thread, it's enough to make some want to throw in the towel.

Comments

I haven't checked out the thread yet, but I'm not too worried. Of course, there will be some terrible sites that go live, just as the DTP craze gave us, but talent always wins out in the long run.
