Tragic Rufus
Last night my wife and I saw Rufus Wainwright perform at Earthlink Live here in Atlanta, and were anything but dissapointed. Wainwright is simply too smart, too talented, and too damn pretty for his age - a classically trained child prodigy who writes insanely melodic, intricately laced compositions that sound like a modern adaptation of Tin Pan Alley mixed with French cabaret and a dash of 60s psychedelia. He's most at home behind the piano, head held low over the mic for a lower vocal vibrato, but was surprisingly capable as a stand up vocalist without an instrument. I always thought Rufus would be shy, inward, and possibly a little possessed on stage (like Tori Amos) but was actually quite personable, modest, and at times a little goofy. I just hope he doesn't burn too bright too fast - he's too good, and the world needs more original artists like him.

gotta root for my homeboy. Montreal's music scene rocks...especially now that The Dears have gotten a deal with Universal. (www.thedears.org)

Goodness. I've been a big fan of Rufus for a while now. His 1998 self-titled CD is still in my 'music for the painting studio' rotation.
Sadly, I have yet to see him perform.
