Colin Moock and Flash MX

Colin Moock, author of ActionScript: The Definitive Guide, has posted a FAQ to answer questions regarding changes to the ActionScript code base introduced by Flash MX that could affect the content of his book.

Moock will have to write a new book for Flash 6 (MX). Yes he says that 90% of the information written in the ASDG will still apply to Flash 6, why would we want to program that way? With all the new features and commands in Flash 6 it will change the way we write the Actionscipt. After looking at some sample Flash 6 code from Macromedia it looks like it will be extreamly easier to control objects with AS. I doubt I will ever refer to my old Flash 5 books again.

I think moock is stalling: although "90%" of the code hasn't changed, there's a significantly different way of programming that MM is now encouraging. Things like object listeners and OOP heirarchy are now almost requirements.

It's not hard to learn Flash syntax; what's hard is knowing where to put what kind of code. Rather than simplifiying this issue (like Director did in v6 with behaviours), MM has actually made it more complex. I look forward to Moock's explanations of the new stuff.
