Macromedia Announces Flash MX

Now it's official. The next version of Macromedia Flash will follow that time-honored marketing tradition of shoving the character X into their software title for no logical reason. Macromedia has unveiled Flash MX, aka Flash 6, featuring a more logical, Dreamweaver-style GUI, a more robust ActionScript editor, native support for importing video, and even a snappy new logo.

For those of us in Atlanta, Macromedia is holding a free What's New in Macromeida Flash MX Seminar on March 20th plus some more hands-on, paid events for those who want to learn Flash right from the source.

Update: WebMonkey has posted a detailed overview of Flash MX. One of the more interesting tidbits of news to come out about MX is that Macromedia is phasing out Generator, and will only provide technical support and maybe an additional bug fix in 2002. Then it'll be gone. Flash MX has absorbed most of Generator's assets, namely the ability to dynamically generate images, load audio, and access database content like XML. Macromedia is pushing Flash MX full tilt as a dynamic front-end for online applications, which is a far cry from the tweening symbols of lore. Should be interesting...

Comments

Great news for Flash enthusiasts. I, for one, am going to sit back and watch the boards... after the disaster that was Flash 5, I'm not particularly eager to upgrade until the jury returns a verdict.
